Health Information Technician

Course Description

The purpose of this text is to introduce the student to Health Information Management (HIM) both as a work-based, task oriented function and as a contributing discipline to health care organizations, patients and the health care industry.

Course Objectives

  • Identify and describe the major allied health professionals and their principal occupational settings
  • Students learn about the processes of accreditation and licensure, as well as become familiar with accrediting organizations
  • Students will learn about health information management career opportunities with reference to the electronic health record
  • Students will learn about how data are organized in a health record
  • Students will learn about the structures of the most common coding systems and their uses
  • Identify and explain the major components of the CMS-1450 (UB-04)
  • Identify and explain the major components of the CMS-1500
  • Explain the role of the coder in reimbursement and data quality
  • Describe the revenue cycle and the role of coding in the revenue cycle process
  • Students will learn about different types of insurance plans and government payment systems.
  • Managing health records
  • Students will learn about the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and the recent HITECH legislation surrounding it
